Glacier hiking on Flatbreen with a local guide and expert

The hike on Flatbreen Glacier is a relatively hard and long day hike for fit people. It takes a total of 8-10 hours and there is about 1000 meters of ascent before we reach the glacier front.

Price: 1500- per person (minimum 4 people or minimum price 6000,-)

This hike is a combination of mountain hiking and glacier walking. We are inside Jostedalsbreen National Park for most of the day.

Included: Glacier equipment (crampons, ice axe, helmet, climbing harness, carabiners, rope)

The hike starts from the parking lot in Supphelledalen valley. Remember to bring money to pay the parking fee. The hike goes uphill all the way to Flatbreen glacier, an arm of Jostedalsbreen glacier. The trail is marked and goes through lush deciduous forest, along moraines and avalanche tracks, rivers and streams with meltwater from the glacier. The first third of the hike is fairly steep, while the last two are steep. When we reach the glacier, we usually have lunch or take a quick break, before putting on our glacier gear in ordeer to be equipped for the glacier hike. We have many options for where we set off on the glacier, depending on the snow and ice conditions. Maybe we will find hidden holes or tunnels in the glacier!

Time required: 8-10 hours total.

Distance: 10 km.

Ascent: over 1000 meters of altitude.

Season: July-August (depending on snow and ice conditions)

Minimum age: 12 years.

Difficulty: Hard (Hard for people who are not used to hiking)

Equipment you need: hiking boots, gloves, hat/cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, drink, lunch, snacks, wind/waterproof jacket/pants, extra wool, backpack with space for your personal equipment and the ice equipment you must carry (crampons, ice axe, helmet, climbing harness). In general, we recommend dressing according to the weather and to be as comfortable as possible in the mountains, and check the weather forecast. Please contact us for any questions before the hike.

Important: You should make sure to have travel insurance in place in case something happens. Our guides have every right to cancel the activity before or during its implementation in the event of difficult weather conditions, terrain and/or lack of sufficient equipment and/or skills needed to carry out the activity.
