The mobile glacier museum

The mobile Glacier Museum is a package of experiments that can be carried out at home or in a school lesson. The program is suitable for children in primary school, and was originally created for 5th grade. Start the lesson by showing a short movie related to glaciers. We have used an excerpt from the movie "Ice Age" to arouse interest in the topic.

You can then divide the class into six groups, which rotate between the six stations (experiments). ATTENTION: At station 6 you need real glacier-ice!

The program was part of The Cultural School Bag under the auspices of Sogn & Fjordane County Council, and was very well received by students and teachers. During a double lesson, pupils were able to make scouring strips, see how crevasses are formed and experience air bubbles in thousand-year-old Glacier ice. In the period 2004-2009, an expert traveled around to schools with the mobile Glacier Museum.

Current competence goals (2013):

Geography after the 4th year:
- describe landscapes and use geographical names to explore the landscape near school and home
- tell about important landscapes and landforms in Norway and some other countries

Geography after year 7:
- record and interpret traces of the Ice Age in the home town and explain what the Ice Age had to do with the formation of landscapes and the country as a whole

Geography after year 10:
- understand internal and external forces on the earth, movements in the air masses, the water cycle, weather, climate and vegetation and discuss the connections between nature and society
- explore, describe and explain the natural and cultural landscape in the local community

Science after 2nd year:
- describe, illustrate and discuss own observations from experiments and from nature
- perform experiments with water and light and discuss observations

Science after grade 7:
- describe how some minerals and rocks have been formed, and examine some types found in the local area
- describe key properties of gases, liquids, solids and phase transitions using the particle model
- explain how matter is constructed and how matter can be transformed, using the terms atom and molecule

Science after grade 10:
- investigate the properties of some substances in everyday life
- describe key properties of gases, liquids, solids and phase transitions using the particle model - explain how substances are constructed and how substances can be transformed, using the terms atom and molecule
