Norwegian Glacier Museum

About us

The Norwegian Glacier Museum & Ulltveit-Moe Climate center is an interactive museum for the whole family that gives you knowledge about glaciers and climate in a new and exciting way.

The museum is a private foundation established by the Norwegian Tourist Association, the International Glaciological Society, the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, the Norwegian Polar Institute, Sogn og Fjordane University College, the University of Bergen and the University of Oslo in 1989.

The purpose of the Norwegian Glacier Museum is to collect, create and disseminate knowledge about glaciers and climate. The foundation's activities cover natural science and cultural history. The Glacier Museum shows the interaction in nature and between nature and man - through advanced film technology, interactive models and your own experiments with real glacier ice. The Norwegian Glacier Museum is for the curious person.

Jostedalsbreen National Park

The area is 1315 km², half of which is glacier and 90% of the national park is higher than 800 m above sea level. The Jostedalsbreen glacier is the largest glacier on the European mainland with an area of 458 km².

The architect - Sverre Fehn

The Norwegian Glacier Museum was designed by civil architect M.N.A.L. Sverre Fehn, who has won many international architectural awards.

Sverre Fehn was commissioned to design the Bremen Museum in 1989, and the museum opened in 1991. The buildings he has drawn were often museums or galleries, but also private houses.
