Eco-lighthouse

We have been certified as an Environmental Lighthouse since 2019 and are ready for several years of efforts towards sustainable operations.

The goal in 2019 was to actively work towards a greener and more sustainable future. In September 2025, we were recertified for a new three-year term.

To be certified, we went through a process where we had to satisfy several criteria within topics such as working environment, purchasing, transportation, energy use and waste.

The environmental lighthouse certification was carried out with support and assistance from various stakeholders. Visit Sognefjord has been an important driver for the labeling of the Sognefjord as a sustainable travel destination, and has encouraged all members to consider environmental certification. In addition, the County Municipality had a subsidy scheme for environmental certification through Innovation Norway.

Much of the work on certification and recertification was done in collaboration with environmental lighthouse consultant Bodil Lande at GreenCo. The collaboration with GreenCo has really increased our knowledge of how to operate sustainably as a tourism business. In addition, we have had good collaboration with Helge Evensen Bjørkum at AAA Miljø AS who has been responsible for certification in 2019 and recertification in 2022, and Nils Rune Nesbakk on behalf of Certnor AS with the recertification in 2025.

All employees at the museum have contributed greatly to making the certification possible - from the administrative management to the museum's summer employees. The focus has been on saving water and electricity, proper waste management, offering organic and locally sourced products, food waste, HSE work, and creating and developing an awareness of sustainability among employees, but also among our suppliers.

We thank you for all your help and cooperation in this process, and are proud to be an Environmental Lighthouse!
